Meet Adam Steiner, PLA and Senior Associate at J2 Engineers. We asked him a few questions to learn more about him, his experience, and why he chose to launch the landscape architecture division at J2.
Q: What drove you to choose to join J2 Engineers?
A: “I have known Jeff, Jim, and Bob for many years. There is a comfort level there and I know how they work, their professional standards, and quality of work. I knew what I was getting into, which made it a little less scary.”
Q: What are you most excited about, joining the J2 team?
A: “Growing a new studio and expanding the multidisciplinary practice even further. I am thrilled to add a whole other aspect to the scope of services J2 provides its clients. I see it as an opportunity to bring in more clients, new clients, and old clients.”
With nearly 25 years of experience in landscape architecture for public and private clients in Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, DC, Adam has worked on a variety of projects of significant diversity.
We asked Jeff Gilliland about his excitement for the addition of Adam to the J2 team. “Adam and his team will bring creativity and new ideas to our projects. From the development of exhibits during the entitlement process that help us convey a vision through the implementation of hardscape designs that create special places. We feel Adam and his team will bring talent that complements our existing services beautifully.” Jeff also added, “I’ve known Adam for a long time and have always enjoyed collaborating with him. He has a great sense of humor and is very personable. He’s committed to his clients and works hard to meet their expectations.”
Q: What types of projects have you worked on?
A: “Over the years, I have worked on a variety of projects, including mixed-use, multifamily, urban design and planning, community planning, secure government building, institutional, park, trail, and streetscape projects. My background also includes collaborating on complex zoning entitlement projects through plan preparation, response strategy, and presentations.”
Q: What was the smallest project you have ever worked on? Largest?
A: “No project is ever too small. One project comes to mind where the project was a one-sheet plan to help a client renovate a small corner of a project. One of the most complex, but not largest in scale, has been Avenir Place (Dunn Loring / Merrifield Metro). I was able to work closely with the developer during the initial pursuit to win the RFP and then carry it through completion.”
Adam is a Professional Landscape Architect in Virginia and Maryland, as well as a LEED Accredited Professional. He received his BLA in Landscape Architecture from the University of Maryland. Prior to joining J2, Adam served as Director of Landscape Architecture and Planning at Urban, Ltd. Previously, he was an Associate at Kimley-Horn and Associates for 7 years.
Q: What are your biggest skillsets?
A: “Delivery of a project. I have a strong technical background and understand construction documents and techniques. I understand what to put on paper that can actually be built, not just something that looks good. I also enjoy the zoning and entitlement work. I can negotiate and present well and enjoy serving as an advocate for the client.”
Q: On a personal note, tell us a little about you…
A: “I most enjoy time with my family outside of work. I have two boys, both in high school, with one getting ready to go to Penn State. My wife is super smart and talented, she has a challenging job and travels quite a bit. We both have jobs that require a lot of time and commitment – together we have to juggle life, all of us do, my boys too – our family is a team.”
J2 Engineers is thrilled to have Adam and the addition of landscape architecture to our growing list of services. If you would like to learn more or get in touch with Adam, he can be reached at (703) 361-1550 or email@example.com.
